Volunteering to help in South Africa Each year we recruit and organize a team of volunteers who pay their own expenses and airfares to South Africa to run our children’s camp and workshops for teachers in the Tyume Valley. In 2008 our volunteers were in South Africa in August. Most of our volunteers are teachers but if you have a transferable skill to offer such as sports coaching, music, ICT, art, tailoring, plumbing, car mechanics there are opportunities for you to pass them on and have a great time while you do so. |
Volunteering in the UK If you can’t go to South Africa there are still things that you can do in the UK. Supporters have collected books and musical instruments and organised car boot sales and concerts to raise money for equipment for the Resource Centre. Other ways that you could help include taking responsibility for publicity such as the TVS Newsletter, taking responsibility for our membership database, organising local fundraising events and activities and recruiting new members to the TVS 100 Club. |
What is involved in volunteering to go to South Africa? · Those who join the project are responsible for funding their own flights but their accommodation and basic food costs during the project are provided. · Teachers will be asked to take an active part in the planning and organisation of the visit and in fund raising. · The volunteer teachers visit the Tyume Valley Schools during the school holidays Other Volunteers · Some projects need the help of volunteers with specific skills but they may not be qualified teachers. Please contact us if you are interested in joining us |

What Can You Expect on a Trip? Everyone usually meets up at East London and then we travel together to the Tyume Valley Accommodation is arranged beforehand and may range from very basic rooms in a village, to small hotels. Activities usually include:- · Workshops for teachers · Activity weeks for the students · Visits to the Schools |
There is also time for some relaxation We usually spend a weekend in a hotel in the area. This gives us all the chance to see more of the countryside as well as to get to know each other a little bit more. We also arrange some ‘optional extra visits’ Some Volunteers stay a little longer and take the opportunity to have a holiday. There have been visits along the Garden Route to Cape Town, Swaziland, Durban, Kruger NP Drakensburg Mountains, Victoria Falls, Namaqualand and Botswana |

We can arrange and provide accommodation and a small allowance to help cover your costs. If you are interested please discuss how you would like to help by contacting Dr Margaret Kiloh The Project Coordinator at the address below.
