Tyume Valley Schools

An Educational Project in South Africa

Changing South African Children’s Lives through Education

Study Camps

Schools belonging to our sister organisation, the The Ikhwezi Rural Education Development Association have identified the need for help with putting into practice the new ideas of the South African Curriculum.

We regularly organise short residential courses at Hobbiton Activity Centre & Woody Cape.

During the week the students work in various subject areas such as science, english, maths, art and drama as well as music, sports and adventure activities

The children enjoy staying in the dormitories and they also take part in the Adventure Centres activities including the climbing wall.

This environment has enabled the children to enjoy practical work in all subjects

Study Camps For Children at Hobbiton Centre at Hogsback

The local schools send small groups of students and a teacher to take part in the activities

When they return to their schools the students demonstrate their new skills to their peers and the teachers report back to the rest of the staff.

In the follow up weeks we try and assist the schools to put into practice the new teaching techniques.

Other activities at Hobbiton include hiking to a waterfall & a night hike

Woody Camp Study Camp

Woody Cape

TVS volunteers helped with a program which makes full use of the spectacular & unique environment. Practical investigations are based on species diversity and adaptations of the organisms to different environments.

Woody Cape Nature Reserve is on the coast just north of Port Elizabeth

A guided tour of Addo Elephant Park  by the Rangers forms the basis of further activities ,

Other subject based courses can also based on the visit to Addo and  examination course work can be produced

Workshops For Teachers

We also run separate workshops for teachers which are focused on particular topics

An integral  part of the Study Camps for students is the involvement of their teachers in running the courses alongside the TVS volunteer teachers.

Hogsback Weekend Seminar for Teachers

South African Teachers from primary and secondary schools attended  weekend workshops on HIV Aids run by TVS Volunteer Teachers

A very full program included:-

· discussing the social problems associated with HIV/AIDS- in particular the increasing number of orphans

· the scientific facts

· the locally held myths

We used a variety of teaching methods in delivering this program. We discussed the current HIV/Aids situation in Tyume Valley. The second part of the weekend concentrated on developing lessons plans which addressed HIV/AIDS and the new curriculum

Flying High at the Study Camp

During the week at Hobbiton the children  experience the thrill of the high wire and trapeze, a night hike in the woods and other team building activities as well as improving their spoken and written English.

Old fears were conquered, new friendships were formed and, most important of all, the children discovered that nothing is  beyond them.

It was promising that together as educators we can work hard to fight HIV/AIDS.

I have many victims of HIV in my class now I know how to educate them

It was so wonderful—the whole weekend

Evaluation Comments from the South African Teachers

Apart from continuing with our HIV/AIDS theme we were also emphasising the importance of the care of the environment through the eco-schools project. The teachers used waste materials, which they brought with them, to make  various models and a ‘Memory Book’

After School Clubs are being encouraged so as to provide a time and a place where students can talk with those people who have become counsellors. The range of activities aim to increase self confidence and esteem.
