Thanks to the work of TVS volunteers the Resource Centre is now functioning well.
In January Gillian Gape arrived in Tyume to greet the second TVS equipment container and spent the next three months setting up the computer lab and reorganising the library.

In April she was replaced by Jenny Timmer (a 2006 activity camp volunteer) who has worked with the Ikhwezi Committee and local volunteer ‘Metro’ Pikini to organise the Introduction to Computers courses and library visits for local schools.

TVS has now signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Fort Hare University, allowing the TVS computer training room at the university to be used for community training and a Project Coordinator post for the project to be based at the university.

Ikhwezi representative’s UK visit

On June 29th Ms Lumka (Lulu) Pinda, a teacher at Lower Gqumahashe Primary School and Secretary of Ikhwezi, arrived in the UK on a 4 week visit sponsored by TVS.

During her visit Lulu visited schools twinned with Tyume Valley schools, spending the longest period at St Peter’s Catholic Primary School in Waterlooville with TVS Committee member Stephanie Howell.

She also visited our partner, the  Dodgy Clutch theatre project, which is now involved with a Newcastle-based architectural firm in creating an amphitheatre for the performance of traditional arts at Lower Gqumahashe.

The School Partnership Program

TVS has already linked up several UK primary schools and  secondary schools with Tyume schools as part of the TVS Partnership Programme

These links will enable the schools to develop creative exchanges leading to meaningful  joint projects. We provide guidance and practical assistance with developing these partnerships.

TVS Volunteers

School partnerships are hard work so we are grateful to our TVS volunteers who visit partner schools and help them to organise activities and project work to be shared with their South African partner.

Fund Raising

We are always grateful for help with fundraising from UK school so many thanks to St Peter’s, Waterlooville, for funds to repair the school roof (blown off in a storm)  of their partner Ncera Zantsi and to Hartshead Junior and Infant School for pledging the cost of an internet connection for their partner Ntulikhazi. 2009 Flying High at Hobbiton

This July TVS funded and organised another week at Hobbiton on Hogsback. A  hundred children from five different primary schools worked with their teachers and international volunteers from TVS and the Hobbiton team,  learning new skills both in and out of the classroom.

As you can see, they had a great time while they learned and lived in a completely different environment. Old fears were conquered, new friendships were formed and, most important of all, the children discovered that nothing is  beyond them.

During the week at Hobbiton the children  experienced the thrill of the high wire and trapeze, a night hike in the woods and other team building activities as well as learning about  maps,  writing poems and, in the process, improving their spoken and written English.
