Woody Cape Activity Week |

2008 Volunteers Visit to Woody Cape Nine TVS volunteers helped with the program in 2008 The first week was spent running the course for 45 Grade 10 Secondary School Students and their teachers at Woody Cape The course involved ecological field work and following the trip to Addo Elephant Park, further work on species diversity and adaptations to different environments. The English course was also based on the visit to Addo and the students developed examination course work The next 2 weeks was spent in the schools following up the work done at Woody Cape and assisting with project work |
The 45 students and 6 teachers came from 3 secondary schools There was much excitement as it was the first time any of these schools had ever taken students so far away for a residential course Everyone arrived on Sunday evening and our 5 day course started promptly at 9.00 Monday morning |

Woody Cape Nature Reserve is on the coast just north of Port Elizabeth The conservation area extends over about 25 000 ha of lightly undulating to flat terrain and incorporates the Alexandria coastal dune fields |
Both the Science and English courses were closely linked to the Grade 10 National Curriculum so that the work completed could be submitted as course work Science—this was a practical fieldwork course in which pupils studied the diversity and adaptations of animals & plants found on the dunes and in the thicket. We also used the Addo visit as a basis for further ecology work |
English—the students considered different styles of writing to finally produce a pamphlet that would provide information for visitors to Addo NP
Addo NP On Wednesday we had a wonderful visit to Addo Elephant park where the students were able to see a wide range of animals including elephants, rhino, giraffe, antelope crocodiles and warthog—to name but a few, For all the students and teachers this was the first time they had seen these native South African animals and they were very excited and inspired |
The course was organised and taught by the UK and SA teachers who were ably assisted the other UK volunteers The students had access to a computer room which was used to both produce their work and for extra evening sessions The students worked so hard that it was quite difficult to get them to stop working and take their breaks ! To relax the students played games and they were able to use the swimming pool. We enjoyed a week of beautiful sunny weather which enabled us to make full use of the lovely surroundings |
Fund Raising Please help us to raise funds to enable us to continue running courses like this for the students and teachers They really enjoyed it and it gives them all such confidence and inspiration to work hard at their studies It costs £65 to send 1 student or teacher on this course We urgently need to raise over £3,000 to enable us to continue running these courses next year |
